The General Pershing was launched as a fishing boat in 1930. Built at the historic Monterey Boat Works by the Siino family. Originally built for Jolt'n Joe DiMaggio's first cousin Neno DiMaggio and fisherman partner Chracciolo. In 1937 the boat was hired out to MGM for the filming of the movie "Captains Courageous" starring Spencer Tracy. In 2007 the boat was returned to the Siino family. The Siino family is committed to restoring this historic fishing boat and to its use with the Classroom on the Bay.
More than 5,000 man-hours have been expended by four full-time volunteers and 18 part-time volunteers in two restoration periods (2014 and 2020). Moving the boat out-of the water is called "Haul Out" and the days taking up space in the boat yard for restoration is called "Lay Time." The total cost of Haul Out and Lay Time was $28,386. Another large restoration cost was material, it was calculated at over $33,000.
The cost of berthing the boat at Monterey Bay Boatworks from November 2019 to November 2022 was $27,000.
The cost of berthing and restoration has been made possible by the contributions from the Board of Directors of Monterey Boat Heritage, Inc., and the individual contributions of Andy Siino, Mike Maiorana, Barton Bruno and Chuck Piccata.
